Travis Scott has addressed the backlash he’s facing after he removed a transgender model from his album artwork.
The rapper, 26, shared his Astroworld artwork, shot by famous photographer Dave LaChapelle, on Instagram early last week.
LaChapelle then shared another version of the artwork which featured iconic transgender model Amanda Lepore.
Amanda also posted the album cover that she was featured in, which prompted her and also countless fans to question why she didn’t appear in the image Travis shared.
“It was great being part of @david_lachapelle’s incredible photograph of @travisscott’s album cover but I’m curious why I’m not on the picture @travisscott posted,” she shared on Instagram.
“#amandalepore #glamourgirl A girl can’t help it. Too distracting for the eyes. Upstaged everyone in the photograph. Oh well……….. I love @david_lachapelle and @travisscott Love and kisses.”
But others were less reserved, with RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Aquaria writing: “U can tell exactly the mindset and beliefs of (presumably) travis and (specifically) his fans by the repulsive remarks they share about a very valid complaint about the artwork regardless of who’s complaining.
“Grab a towel. Your phobias are showing.”
However, after catching wind of the storm he’d created, Travis decided to address it on social media on Saturday.
“Thank you David LaChapelle and Amanda Lepore and everyone that came out to make all the covers and the vision come to life!!! Astroworld is about love and expression not hate,” he wrote.
“This very important for me to speak about: Growing up I’ve been taught to accept everyone, not to cast people away but bring them in your home! I have nothing but respect for the LGBTQ community.
“I want to use my voice to make it clear that everyone on this planet is as equal and fucking awesome to the next. Me and LaChappelle set out to create images that I grew up watching him create for years that inspire me today.”
Responding to Amanda’s comment about “upstaging” everyone in the photo, he went on: “Yo Amanda you did upstage everyone even me and I can’t wait for everyone to see the booklet that me and Dave put together that includes all these images. Thank you for being apart of it.
“Sorry for the misuinderstanding love you guys and THANK YOU ALL!! Everyone can one is welcome is Astroworld.”
Amanda then replied to Travis’s statement, writing: “Nothing but LOVE for @travisscott and @david_lachapelle thank u for having me and i’m glad to be part of this album.”
